What to Feed a Cockatiel

Cockatiel food should also include liquid vitamin incorporated in the drinking water of the bird, or a powder vitamin supplement added to the birdÂ’s solid foods. These nutritional supplements are particularly helpful for breeding birds and those feeding their young.

About Cockatiel

A cockatiel is one of the more popular birds kept as pets. It is a small parrot with different color patterns. It is sociable and easy to train, and with its small size, the cockatiel can be very easy to tame compared to other species of parrots. In taking care of this bird, feeding is very important. Thus, those interested in taking care of a cockatiel should know what are the different cockatiel food to give to the bird.

Variety is Healthy

The key to a healthy cockatiel is a balanced, varied diet. Seeds are considered essential foods but can have high levels of fat, thus it is recommended that it forms only less than 1/3 of the bird’s diet. Cockatiel owners should choose a blend containing sunflower seeds, millet, niger, oats and other similar seeds. Pellets are also considered as good choices for cockatiel diet since it is balanced nutritionally. The pellet should be served in a dish that is placed on the side of the cage or at the bottom of the cage, with enough distance for the bird not to accidentally drop its waste on it.

Special Diet

Whenever the cockatiel is nesting or feeding its babies, a special seed diet should be prepared. Pet stores as well as veterinary clinics can give some specially prepared formula, which is rich in nutrients for a cockatiel in need of special nutrition.

Fresh Food

A pet cockatiel also loves to chomp on fresh, organic foods so it is recommended that the bird gets these foods. Fresh organic vegetables should be cut into small pieces before given to the bird. It particularly likes vegetables like corn, carrots and peas but it is not recommended that the bird is fed with cooked vegetables as well as those which have sauce or butter on them. This bird also likes fresh fruits especially non-acidic ones like mango, papaya and bananas. Like vegetables, these fruits should be given in small pieces. Natural fruits without added sugar should be the only ones given to the pet.

Water

Water is another essential part of the cockatiel diet. It should be fed with fresh water daily. Because this bird usually soaks their food in water, it is normal for a water stored inside the cockatiel cage to get dirty in a matter of hours. Pet owners should therefore, clean the water bowl regularly especially if the cockatiel likes soaking its food. Non-chlorinated water is particularly advisable.

Extras

Cockatiel food should also include liquid vitamin incorporated in the drinking water of the bird, or a powder vitamin supplement added to the bird’s solid foods. These nutritional supplements are particularly helpful for breeding birds and those feeding their young.

A pet cockatiel should also be given with treats from time to time such as fruit snacks and popcorn sticks. Likewise, providing a cuttle bone can help sharpen its beak. Spraying of millet seeds can also help in keeping the good condition of the bird’s beak.
