Finches as House Pets

Finch birds make for interesting and lively companions. In today’s hectic way of living it is not a bad idea to have a finch as a pet in the house. With their active and entertaining personality plus the wide variety of patterns and colors, any house finch bird can be interesting enough for any person, young or old alike. House finch birds are also quiet and can live in small areas, making them ideal as pets for those who live in apartments. Likewise, finches are less expensive compared to parrots.

Characteristics

There are lots of types of finches. The usual type can grow from 3 inches up to 8 inches in length. Finches are usually quiet, some can carry a tune, although all of them are active. The usual life span of a finch can range from five to 10 years, although some of them have lived for more than 20 years. It is said that more than 100 varieties of finches are available for homeowners to choose from. These include the Zebra finch, Strawberry Finch, Spice Finch, Society Finch, Red-Star Finch, Pintail Whydah, Owl Finch, Diamond Sparrow, Blue-face Parrot Finch, and the African Silverbill.

Feeding Habits

Finches as house pets are known to be easy to feed. Food and water should be provided daily to these little birds to ensure their good health. Finch seed is required for house finch birds, with seed mixes for these little creatures readily available in pet shops. Usually, a finch will eat a teaspoon of seed daily and rarely overeats. The bird may need to eat more during the cold months. Supplements such as sprouts and millet, vitamins like Cod liver oil for Vitamin D, and protein-rich foods like eggs, and dry dog food can also be given to them.

Finches also need to drink fresh water daily. Adding soluble vitamins can also be done. The bird requires bathing at least once a week, or daily during the hot months. This is done by placing a dish full of water on the lower part of its cage. Likewise, finches require occasional trimming of its nails. Nail trimmers for birds and styptic powder, that is used for stopping the bleeding, are also available in most pet stores.

Housing

Finches require minimal space that makes it such an ideal house companion. At least a 30 x 45 cm cage for every pair of finches is required for the bird to exercise by flying. A bird perch may also be provided to help the birds in wearing their claws down. The cage should be kept away from windows and doors to avoid direct sunlight. The cage should also be protected at night to prevent any disturbances.

The housing of the finch should be kept fresh and clean all the time to prevent the occurrence of illnesses and diseases on the bird. The cage should be cleaned daily from food dishes and water spills. The bottom of the cage should also be changed with new paper regularly. Washing the cage, including the perches, is also ideal.
